You service your car when it’s due, no amount of clever marketing should convince you otherwise. But, if you happen to have some flexibility then one of the best seasons to service your car is autumn – especially October and November.
If preparing your car for the most demanding months of the year, saving money, and avoiding the worst of the weather sounds like a good shout, then let us explain exactly why autumn is the sweet spot for car servicing, and why so many drivers overlook it.
PREPARING FOR THE WINTER
Winter. It’s cold, wet, and dark. Cold and damp are notoriously bad for mechanical and electrical things – namely, cars.
Winter makes unknown pre-existing problems with your car dramatically worse. All the wear and tear from the summer months racks up, and can become a full-blown breakdown by January.
Batteries lose up to 35% of their power in freezing temperatures, and this gets worse with age – but it can go completely unnoticed in normal use. A battery that reads weak on a tester in October is a battery that will die on a freezing January night – probably in a car park, or when you’re already running late.
But an autumn car service is like a pre-winter prep session for your car, helping run better for longer.
WHAT GETS CHECKED IN AN AUTUMN SERVICE?
A proper autumn service isn’t just a generic oil change. It’s an opportunity to focus on the systems that winter punishes most. Here’s what should be on the checklist:
Battery health
This is the big one. A professional battery test will tell you whether yours is strong enough to cope with the cold months ahead. If it’s marginal, replacing it now is far cheaper and less stressful than being stranded in December!
Tyres
Cold weather affects tyre pressure. Wet, leafy roads demand proper tread depth. Your mechanic will check tread depth, look for uneven wear, and check for cracks or bulges that could become dangerous. If your tyres are approaching the legal minimum of 1.6mm, autumn’s the time to replace them, not the middle of a winter downpour.
Brakes
Wet, slippery roads and longer stopping distances mean your brakes need to be in top condition. Worn pads, discs, or brake fluid that’s past its best should all be addressed before winter.
Lights and wipers
Darker mornings and evenings mean your lights matter more than ever. A blown bulb that goes unnoticed in summer becomes a serious safety issue in winter. Wipers should be checked too – smearing blades are dangerous in heavy rain and low sun.
Coolant and antifreeze
Your cooling system needs the right mix of antifreeze to prevent freezing and overheating. This is a classic autumn check that many drivers forget.
Heating and demisting
Your heater, blower, and demister need to work properly for safe winter driving. It’s not just for comfort – if your windscreen takes forever to clear, that’s a problem that needs fixing.
Suspension and steering
Potholes are worse in winter, and worn suspension components make them more dangerous. An autumn service can catch worn bushes, shocks, or steering parts before they become a bigger issue.
LOWER COSTS (AND OTHER ADVANTAGES) OF AN AUTUMN CAR SERVICE
There’s loads of good reasons to get your car fixed in autumn. First, garages are quieter. Off-peak slots often mean more competitive pricing, and you’re not competing with every other driver who suddenly needs help when their car goes wrong.
Second, you avoid emergency repairs. A battery that dies in January means a call-out, a tow, and possibly a missed day of work. A battery replaced in October means a routine fix at a fair price. The same logic applies to brakes, tyres, and pretty much everything else.
Third, you can plan ahead. If your service reveals something that needs attention but isn’t urgent, you can budget for it and book it in at a convenient time. That’s far better than being forced into an expensive, inconvenient repair at the worst possible moment (Christmas, anyone?).
And as a bonus, you protect your car’s value. A well-maintained car with a full service history is worth more and is easier to sell. Regular, timely servicing keeps your car in the best possible condition, meaning you always get the most out of it – even when it’s time to sell it on.

BOOK YOUR AUTUMN CAR SERVICE
So the smart money’s on car servicing during the autumn. But in the end, deciding when to service your car comes down to whether you prefer to react to problems, or prepare for them.
If your car needs a service right now, then there’s no better time than the present to get it done. Leaving it until “the right time” is just going to make matters worse!
But you can still be proactive about maintenance. Staying on top of your servicing, thinking ahead to the conditions your car will face, and dealing with small issues before they become big ones – this will all definitely make life with your car easier.
If the squeaky wheel gets the grease, then the wheel that’s taken care of never squeaks at all… So keep your car out of the garage for longer, and more money in your pocket, by keeping on top of your car servicing.
There’s no better time than right now…
