SUMMER CAR CHECKS –AVOID A HOT AND SWEATY BREAKDOWN!
Believe it or not, summer is here! After all the recent rain we’ve had, the inevitable “summer heatwave” is set to light up our lives over the next few weeks.
We’ll believe it when we see it – but just in case, we’ve put together a list of things to check this summer before taking to the road. Make sure you get your car sorted for summer, with these top tips.
ALWAYS TAKE THE SPARE TYRE WITH YOU
Imagine packing your car for a camping trip (pretty much the only option in lockdown), only to find you’ve run out of room for the dog, one of the kids and half the tent! We’ve been there, too – and the temptation to make a little extra room by removing the spare tyre (and the tools that go with it) can be pretty high.
Don’t do it, though. Getting stranded in the middle of nowhere in the heat of summer is absolutely no fun. Burning through fuel to keep the aircon going and draining the battery are likely to follow. This is enough to make a spare tyre (or seal kit) essential equipment.
Oh – and if you’re carrying lots of extra weight, be sure to adjust your tyre pressure accordingly!
OTHER CAR ESSENTIALS TO PACK
It’s always a good idea to have a little survival pack in your car, with some water bottles and long-life snacks to keep you going should you get stuck. If you break down on a motorway, you’ll have to get out of the car and wait for recovery as far from the road as possible, away from any shade – so make sure you’ve got sun protection, too.
Summer means long days spent outdoors – and if you’ve parked up somewhere remote and thought “music would make this better”, then you’re not alone. But beware: leaving the entertainment system running with doors open and cabin lights on is one of the easiest ways to run a battery down to empty – especially an older one.
Watch out for sluggish starting and dim lights when the engine isn’t running. If you’re not sure about your car battery health, pop in for a car battery check.
AIR CON CHECKS
There’s hardly anything worse than getting into a roasting hot car and blasting the air conditioner – only to be hit with a dank-smelling jet of air that never gets cool.
If, like many people over the last 18 months, your car has barely moved, your air conditioning is likely to do this to you when you turn it on next. Thankfully, a car air con service can make it work like new. Keep your cool – and book in for a car air con service and regas before you head off for a summer road trip.
TOP UP YOUR WINDSCREEN WASHER FLUID
This one’s so easy to forget – especially if your car doesn’t alert you to it. Windscreen washer fluid is by far its most useful in the summertime. The sheer volume of bugs hitting your windshield can make it almost impossible to see, and without washer fluid to cut through the grease, your bone-dry wipers will only make things worse. You can easily get through a tank of washer fluid on a long trip through bug-infested country roads, so make sure you’ve got some extra fluid in the boot for a top-up.
Dust builds up quickly out on the road, too – and even if it rains, the dust collected by falling raindrops can coat your windshield, drying out to leave a fine film that reduces visibility.
OTHER THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Bugs aren’t the only things to look out for on country roads. In rural areas during the summer months, animals are a common sight in the road at all times of day – and deer are especially important to watch out for at night.
Stay alert, keep your distance and have a fun-filled family road trip this summer!
